Individual Treatment

Initially a thorough assessment of your concerns will be undertaken. This will include a 1-1.5 hour assessment session, and we may also ask you and your child to complete relevant questionnaires. Next, a treatment plan will be devised which usually involves regular 1 hour sessions with your psychologist. Our psychologists practice from a Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) perspective, which is the most effective treatment for many childhood emotional problems. Commonly children and their parents are taught the principles behind the Take Action Program. Children are taught a six-step ACTION Plan that assists them to recognise when they are feeling anxious, how to keep calm in anxious situations, how to think strong thoughts, and how to gradually face their fears. Problem solving skills and social skills training is also included in the program as many anxious children experience difficulties with their peer relationships. Each parent and child receives a detailed treatment manual.

 Medicare Rebates

Medicare rebates may be available with a referral from a General Practitioner, private Paediatrician or Psychiatrist. From 1st November 2012, psychology Medicare services are limited to a maximum of 10 individual sessions per calendar year. Please speak to your GP about a referral under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, or ask your specialist for a referral under the Better Access initiative.

Private Health Fund Rebates

Most private health insurance funds provide rebates for psychology services. Check with your fund for details of your psychology cover. Please note that the Medicare rebate is an alternative to Private Health insurance rebates so clients can not use private health insurance ancillary cover to 'top up' the Medicare rebate paid for psychology services. Clients need to decide whether they will use their Medicare or Private Health Insurance.
